"When people talk of the freedom of writing, speaking or thinking I cannot choose but laugh. No such thing ever existed. No such thing now exists; but I hope it will exist. But it must be hundreds of years after you and I shall write and speak no more."
John Adams 1735-1826, Second President of the USA
Seems Mr. Adams was correct. And still waiting...
I got a bone to pick:
First off, thanks to all you folks who allow unmoderated commenting on your blogs. I kinda semi- understand the occasional need for an author's comment approval/moderation in certain instances, but I linked to a site earlier wherein the blogger asks for advice/opinion whatever. So's I proceed to the comment section, spend a fe.. no, WASTED a few minutes typing one up-- only to be told commenting is a 'members only' thing.
Then WTF ask, on a blog that anyone in the world can access, "what would you do ..."? If you're only writing for a few sets of eyes, why not use email?
Least the person could have done is forewarn before the comment is typed up.
I've only run across something similar once before; tried to jump to the person's blog from their profile only to be told the blog itself was for a select few.
Again, why this medium? I love privacy; agree wholeheartedly every human has a right to as much as they want, but there's bound to be other ways to share your secrets with only the three other sheeple who agree with you. The INTERNET sure don't seem the best choice!
And what about all these comments from Anonymous? I tell ya, s/he sure gets around, and seems to be a pretty pessimistic critter...
"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

Speak on, folks.

To be honest, I don't do the moderating comments thing for the sake of actually moderating them. I do it so I can keep track of them. And there are so many people out there in the blogosphere who need to do the same. Otherwise, in my case especially, I can't always tell what's had a new comment and what is older. This is especially helpful when a comment is made on a older post that, without the moderation thingy telling me I've had a new comment I would probably never even know about it.
But I agree about the frustration of trying to comment on or view a private blog. But I guess people must have their reasons, what they are I don't know.
Hey livia!
I have somehow enabled e-mail notification of "new comments"; doesn't matter if the post is a month old-- a quick jump to 'dashboard' then gmail and i am notified of the most recent comment on any given published post.
i do like to keep up w/ them, if only to show interest and respond in a timely manner.
And the need to moderate i spoke of, the understanding need for said, came from being an out-of the-broom-closet Witch in an otherwise wholly (holy!) predominant xtian family. I understand, living in the "bible belt" as we do, the practicality...
and maybe the 'moderation thingy' is more efficient @ updating me than email??? i must needs pick your brain further on this point... (always willing to streamline, thus alot more surf [internet, not bull shoals lake, variety!] time...)
Thanks for the visit, o tatted one.
more soon...

I have comment moderation on, mostly because I was badly spammed on a blog - 100s in a matter of days, so I switched it on to ensure comments are relevant.
I am a subscriber to one or two private posts that are necessary. One, in particular, is done to safeguard their job/career and its totally understandable.
Hmm, I'm not sure I knew you could do the comment notification via email.
Does anyone know a way to track comments you've made to other blogs? I leave comments and then forget where.
A. Celt,
Yes Ma'am, that i can see. wonder how spam got on a comment section? guess where there's a will...
And i'll ask the blogosphere about the comment tracking; would be a helpful little tool, eh!
Livia, I think when i was setting up the blog or when... hell, i'll have to go back & look, but i aint no comp genius, so somewhere it was offered as an option, and i opted!
I'll find it and let ya know..
LOL
