The Down Side Of Prepping

Is When It Becomes Necessary To Go About Using ...

The Buick's trunk-- it's a day short of the "week" 'till she be properly name-called!-- holds the following items:
  • BOB (no, not my girlfriend's husband's body, silly-- my Bug-Out-Bag...)
  • large tarp
  • collapsible lawn chair
  • tool box(es)
  • cast-iron cookware
  • jumper cables, heavy-duty
  • spare water-- both potable AND emergency/vehicle use
  • replacement oil (~4 qts.)
  • antifreeze/engine coolant (2 gal.)
  • windshield cleaner fluid
Probably a few other odds and ends--technical [rock-] climbing harness, aviaton headphones, windshield sun visor...
OH! And let's not forget the spare tire, jack, lug wrench etc...

In fact, it is the latter triage that caused the former ensemble to become grief today, for the spare is neatly ensconced in one of those 'hide-under-the-trunk-carpet' cubby-holes.
BURIED, in essence. It is also today, alas, that said spare and affiliates were needed...

Which meant hauling out the mountain of prep/emergency items atop said grave...

Fortunately, I was at the house, and not on the side of some Houston, Tx. highway, when in need of unpacking (and eventually re-packing) the sundry items...
A mere 15 minutes later I was on my way to work.

A small price to pay, that quarter-hour it took to remove things one never hopes be needed. I mean, SHEESH!!! what a pain, all this "stuff" impeding my getting to sell-my-time place a few minutes outside norm. The larger comfort is, knowing and SEEING that were it ever some roadside one were flattened or otherwise stranded on, well... almost ANY (mechanical necessity) eventuality was ready to be met...

As a bonus, the out-hauling and replacing of said items was fair opportunity for... we'll label it an 'involuntaty inventory'! lol! **Cyg. makes mental note of things to add in the near future: 4-way lug wrench; small hydraulic jack; replacement cans of fix-a-flat; 12-v compressor; full-sized wheel and tire to replace 'donut'; 1st aide kit... SIGH!!!**
Never-ending, eh?

Prep on, folks!
[p.s.-- Mayberry-- jeeps are looking better and better, what with the spare readily mounted on her rear...];P

Slainte, Friends!

Heh...better you than me, Sir - my spare requires a special tool to lower it from the underside of the van...and I'd probably chip a nail fetching it and be forced to cry.

Umm...you Do know I'm kidding about the nail thing, right?? ALas, not about the spare, which is mounted on the underside of Rosie the Mule (my beloved Astro van and faithful home on wheels when I'm feeling the Gypsy tugging me this way and that).

Sorry 'bout the flat...but glad it wasn't roadside!

Sorry about the flat.

On our vehicles, the Tahoe's spare is mounted under the carriage and the G6 has it under the trunk carpet.

Might I suggest you store said preps in a an old milk crate or 2 so that they can be lifted out all at one time.

Talk to ya soon!

Ughhh..flats..I got a flat in subzero weather on I-84 in CT...it was fookin' freeezing and I had the same situation with my spare as Kyddryn described. Fighting the wind and the bitter cold and a spare that would not budge..I resorted to calling Roadside Assistance...Sometimes you just gotta say uncle..

Peace - Rene

I've just remembered another definition of "Bob"...but I'm too polite to share it in an open forum! Funny story, though...maybe I'll do a blog post about it sometime...

Lady K...

yes, the image of YOU chipping a nail and crying...
just don't mesh with the image of you!
I HATE those crank-down jobbies-- see lady Rene's comment for but ONE reason why...

Rosie the Mule, is she? Bet she be less of an ass than me Molly has been the past few months! lol!
[And YES, it be officially a week, and ol' MollyMaroon be, mostly, acting a 'lady', so I'll call her thus, and see what next fit it bring! HAR!

Lady Felinae...
I thank you for the milk crate idea...
Most things-- tool boxes, etc. are well-contained. the water and such is a pain-- water I keep in 2-litre coke bottles; the rest, mostly well-organized...
Just an arse-pain to get to the spare, and need to use the mfgr-provided jack and lugwrench, etc...
Even in the home drive, glad there wasn't a summer shower to cause further distraction and wetness... might have given up work all together and gone back to bed...
;P

Lady Rene...
Je ne comprends pas how you Northern folk deal at all with the freezing temps... but I agree-- calling in the assistance was prudent at worst given the chilling winds...
Ah, where were those breakdowns when I needed them, girlie in tow, back during me High School daze?!?
LOL1

Thanks for the concern and advice, m'Ladies...

All I can say Brother is "better to have than have not said items". They may have been in the way this time but just think how nice they will be when really needed. Sorry about the flat but at least she is rolling now...LOL

Brother Bulls...
I was trying to say just that-- good to have the things I do-- good to not have cursed the heavens and shaken fist thereupon...
but to KNOW that the situation was, if not welcome, at minima was PREPARED for...

thanks, Bro!

Jeeps are great, but in storage space are sorely lacking! Rag tops aren't very conducive to security either.... I carry nothing I won't miss when it's gone! Cherokees are good, which I can say from experience. And the spare tire mounts inside the back, left side, against the side, standing up. Easy to get to!

Go for a 4.0 six banger. Great engine! That is, unless Catman comes through with those Unimogs!
